Solar System Sling
3D planetary sandbox simulation game
Solar System Sling
August 2025
Solar System Sling is a planetary simulation game that allows you to create planets and send them into orbit around a star. Practice creating new planets to get stable orbits that exist in the habitable zone around the star, neither too hot nor too cold for life to bloom. Defend your planets and their orbits from other celestial bodies that might pass through the system, and try to make new planets without negatively disrupting the orbits of your existing planets. How high can you get your population to grow?
Solar System Sling was a game created in four days for the GMTK Game Jam, hosted in July and August 2025. As such, all assets for the game were made in that period, and the game went from start to finish in just four days. The theme for the jam was “Loop,” and the game utilizes this by challenging the player to get several planets to loop around their star in a stable orbit.
The game was made using the Unity Engine, being coded in C#, while the art assets were made using Clip Studio Paint Pro.
This project showcases an ability to create games quickly that are fun and accurately physics-based. Solar System Sling utilizes real math to calculate the orbits of each planet, and each celestial body has a gravitational pull on one another. Play around with the planets to see how they interact with each other, and click on each object to learn more about it. While this game was only created in four days, it has a lot of potential to become an even better game with more additional and accurate features for the player to use.
Instructions
Controls
Place planets by enabling Place Mode and clicking down. Pull back your mouse to set the planet's base speed, and then release! The planet will launch into the system. Control the planet's size and speed to get a successful orbit around the star.
Click on planets while not in Place Mode to learn more about them and see how they're doing! Planets that are too close or too far from the sun will be too hot or too cold, and therefore have a small chance of spawning life. Aim for that sweet spot!
The number of planets is marked by the planet icon, and the total population between planets is marked by the heart icon.
Left click - (Place Mode) start creating a new planet (Normal Mode) select object or toggle info box
Right click - Pan camera around
A and D or Left and Right Arrows - Swap viewing object
W and S or Up and Down Arrows - Scale up or down the current planet being placed
Mouse wheel - Zoom in or out
Tab - Toggle Place Mode
Edit planet names by clicking on the name in the info box
